Redefining what a Mainstream Model Can Be.
The latest in Nissan’s quest to change the game and goal of its most popular models continues with the announcement of the 2019 Nissan Altima and its list of features. With an AWD option, new turbo-four engine, and driver assistance technology (among other updates), next year’s Altima will be one of very few crossover vehicles on the market available in its midsize family sedans. The 2019 edition is expected to offer optional four-corner traction for the first time in Nissan’s history. The AWD option is set to be available in each of the Altima’s five trims, which include the S, SR, SV, SL, and Platinum.
Altima’s makeover will see the model sporting a longer, lower, and wider style with a 1.9-inch longer wheelbase. Its grille will be shaped in a posh “V”-mouth with black-accented C-pillars. The vehicle’s interior features a lower cowl which provides more space in the cabin in addition to a standard 7.0-inch screen in the instrument cluster. Other standard features include an 8.0-inch center-dash screen fully equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri Eyes Free, and Google Assistant voice recognition.
The Altima’s facelift is not the only thing receiving an update. A new engine lineup and a reworked suspension system are just a few of the many additions drivers will find when the Altima is released, which is expected to be in the late fall of 2018. Nissan plans to replace their current 3.5-liter V-6 with the Altima’s upgrade engine, which will be an all-new 2.0-liter turbo four that makes 248 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Though this means less horsepower compared to the V-6, the update compensates with a 22 lb.-ft. increase of grunt.
The model’s base engine is compatible in all of the model’s trims with all-wheel drive. Although it will remain a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I-4, the engine will be updated with 80 percent of its parts either new or completely redesigned. Because of that, horsepower will reach 188 compared to the outgoing Altima’s 179. The torque will also be adjusted by 3 lb.-ft. to 180. The horsepower will be managed exclusively by Nissan’s “Xtronic” CVT automatic, a rough-and-tough transmission that also packs the power.
At the time the 2019 model was announced, Nissan said the Altima would include the first model-specific application of monotube rear shocks, added suspension reinforcements to improve vehicle response and suspension geometry adjustments to improve steering feedback. The Altima will also introduce safety-focused technology not unlike that included in Nissan’s 2018 Rogue. According to Nissan, the ProPilot Assist feature will alleviate the driver’s workload by decreasing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking input under specific driving conditions including single-lane highway driving. Nissan was quick to note that although ProPilot is a step in the right direction for future autonomous vehicles, it is and should not be treated as a self-driving feature.
Nissan said they will begin taking reservations for the whole 2019 Altima lineup starting June 15. The model hits the mainstream market this fall at dealerships nationwide including Palm Springs Nissan, the best Nissan dealer near Palm Springs. Drivers who register for an Edition One will be able to select one of the following gifts: a Series 3 Apple Watch, an Amazon Echo Show with an Amazon Prime membership, or a Bose Soundlink Revolve+ with an Amazon Echo Dot and Amazon Prime membership. For regular pre-ordered Altimas, consumers’ options include an Amazon Echo Spot, a Bose Soundlink Revolve with an Amazon Echo Dot, or a pair of wireless Apple AirPod headphones. Eager consumers should make an appointment at Palm Springs Nissan to learn more about bringing the 2019 Nissan Altima — or any vehicle on sale in their inventory .
