New Safety Features for the Nissan Rogue Sport

Call it Christmas in May. Nissan has taken what was already efficient about the Rogue Sport and updated its features to ensure a sleeker, safer driving experience. This is a rare half-model-year update not just for Nissan but the industry as a whole, because the Rogue Sport’s updates are hardly minor adjustments.

Added Features to the Rogue Sport

Announced back in April, the 2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport adds standard safety systems to the original model along with a variety of nifty safety features and accessories. These additions justified the half-model-year update as well as the slight price escalation. A base Nissan Rogue Sport S with front-wheel drive now goes for $22,110. This is a $470 increase but will likely make up for the additional cost of the new safety technology included. The new safety kits for every Rogue Sport model includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control standard is available as an option for both the top SL trim and the mid-tier SV trim. LED running lights, satellite radio, and a backup camera are all included in the standard model equipment. For an additional $1,350, all-wheel drive is available on every trim. All of the Rogue Sport’s prices include a $975 destination charge.

New Technology

Nissan has also added some physical adjustments to the mid-year Rogue Sport model updates. The Rogue Sport SV adds keyless access, 17-inch alloy wheels, and automatic climate control all for $23,740. The top-tier Rogue Sport SL ups the sophistication amp with comfortable heated front leather seats, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, and remote engine start. It also comes with lane departure warning and lane keep assist, both features also available in the SV trim in the SV Technology Package. Nissan’s automatic emergency braking system uses radar technology to monitor the vehicle’s surround area for potential crashes. If the car senses a potential collision, it alerts the driver with audio and visual warnings. Should the driver not respond immediately, the system automatically apples the vehicle’s brakes. The engine of every trim remains the same with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated I4 that puts out 141 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. In terms of transmission, the only option available is a CVT which comes with an Eco mode switch. When it comes to rating, FWD Rogue Sports are rated at 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. AWD (all-wheel-drive), by contrast, lowers those numbers to 24 and 30. Though the Rogue Sport is unique in its rare yet welcome mid-year updates, the model is actually in good company in offering standard automatic emergency braking. The Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Rogue, and Sentra all offer this safety element, though Nissan decided last year to introduce the active safety tech to more of its inventory. Other automakers agreed to standardize such technology by the 2022 model year.
